Literary Review

Abstract

My literary review is about showing how meningitis affects us and providing preventive measures. The paper will be describing the causes and effects as well as preventions that can be made by us while also providing information from different cities. It also provides ways the author uses these connections to prevail how the authors explain each detail and how it can be used to betterment our knowledge as well as educate us on the studies provided by the authors that will be helping us understand our actions towards this particular disease.

Intro

Meningitis is a disease caused by an infection located primarily between both the skull as well as the brain which can be either bacterial or fungal. Meningitis can also damage the spinal cord, causing swelling and a harmful bloodstream infection, termed septicemia, within these areas. One form of meningococcal disease is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. People will have a range of long-term impairment for those who survive, including hearing loss, brain damage and complications with the nervous system, kidneys , loss of limbs, and scarring of the skin.

Prevention and Common in people

The most effective way to protect against certain forms of bacterial meningitis would be to use vaccines. Three types of bacteria are infected and can cause meningitis. As stated in the article by CDC, “Babies are at increased risk for bacterial meningitis compared to people in other age groups. However, people of any age can develop bacterial meningitis. See section above for which bacteria more commonly affect which age groups.” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) This quote shows that younger children are more at risk than any other age but it also tells us that it can happen in any age group. There are many preventions for meningitis. As stated in the study by Healthline  “maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially if you’re at increased risk, is important. This includes getting adequate amounts of rest, not smoking, avoiding contact with sick people.” (Karen Richardson Gill, MD, FAAP). Basic everyday routines such as having enough sleep, having a good inhaling environment as well as keeping a safe distance from people that are sick can also help.

Treatments

Some treatments for Meningitis include antibiotics and shots that can be given to lower the risk. In the article “Meningitis”, it says “Acute bacterial meningitis must be treated immediately with intravenous antibiotics and sometimes corticosteroids. This helps to ensure recovery and reduce the risk of complications, such as brain swelling and seizures.”(Mayoclinic)  It is important to quickly treat acute bacterial meningitis with intravenous antibiotics and sometimes corticosteroids.

Chronic meningitis medication is based on the core cause. Corticosteroids which is a medication known to decrease the swelling inside your body is also known to treat non-infectious meningitis Fungal meningitis is treated through antifungal drugs, and tuberculous meningitis may also be treated by a combination of specific antibiotics. These antibiotics can, nonetheless, have serious side effects, so the treatment may be disrupted until it can be determined by a physician.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Meningitis is a very common disease that is well spread that kills around 500 people every year. Meningitis is a curable disease. It is also very common in most people and moderately easily catched. The authors claims that I have used in the review has helped us have a better understanding of this underlying disease as well as giving us precautions to help for our future.
